Pop Art

Wolverhampton Art Gallery is home to one of the country’s best collections of British and American Pop Art, displayed in a designated Pop Art gallery. Changing exhibitions feature works by Andy Warhol, Richard Hamilton and Pauline Boty. The collection comprises paintings, works on paper and sculpture.

The appointment of David Rodgers as Curator in 1969 started a new era for the gallery. He modernised the Art Gallery, recruiting specialised staff and breathed new life in to the displays. His expertise and determination saw new acquisitions of key works by British and American Pop artists including Roy Lichtenstein and Allen Jones.

This new policy caused a storm of controversy with local and national media portraying it as frivolous spending, this only increased visitor figures and repaid the faith the city council had placed in Rodgers.

During the 1970s through to the 1990s the Art Gallery continued to collect art works that addressed the political and social landscape of modern Britain, especially those relating to conflict.
