Korabra is artist Gavin Jantjes’s series of works, which translates to mean To Go and Come Back.

The exhibition seeks to address issues raised by the slave trade and the affects on recent political and social issues in Africa.

Reflecting the displacement of African people during the periods of colonial expansion in Africa, the works use a series of symbols to explore and represent the suffering, which affected so many people that as a result were displaced across the world.

Born in Cape Town in 1948, Jantjes is an exiled South African artist whose art is a tool that he uses in the exploration and promotion of understanding in the liberation process. Jantjes’s explains that the reason for creating the Korabra series is that ‘approximately 300 million people from Africa were exploited…when you discover that nobody is telling the stories that concern you, you go out and tell them yourself. The Korabra was my way to tell a story that no one wanted to hear’.

The four large works form part of the original Korabra series with the addition of another smaller screen-print which have been brought together from collections held at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, The Herbert, Coventry and Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s own collection.
