Friends of Wolverhampton City Archives
Are you interested in history? Do you use the Archives? Then why not become a Friend of Wolverhampton Archives & Local Studies?
The Friends Group started as an independent body at the end of 2009.
The group’s aims and objectives include:
- Promoting and supporting the work of the Archives service
- Raising the profile of archives locally and encouraging the use of them
- Raising funds for the Archives service
- Providing a forum for users of the Archives service to enable communication with each other and with the service
What We Do
We support and promote the work of the Archives service through fundraising, providing volunteers to work on Archives projects and by helping at Archives events.
Our main fundraising comes through providing refreshments at events such as the Heritage Open Days, Local History Fair and Local History Symposium. We also sell a range of family history binders and conservation grade sleeves that help preserve valuable documents.
Volunteers are involved in transcribing Wolverhampton parish records and a number of members are currently working on the ‘Wolverhampton at War’ project. This will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The project is looking to tell the stories of local Wolverhampton men and women, both at home and abroad, and their experiences during that time, using various sources available at the Archives. The project blog can be found at http://wolverhamptonswar.wordpress.com
We have a series of regular meetings throughout the year at the Archives with a range of speakers on a variety of local history subjects, and have occasional walks around areas of local interest during the summer months.
A quarterly newsletter keeps members up to date with our activities.
