Friends of Wolverhampton City Archives
Are you interested in history? Do you use the Archives? Then why not become a Friend of Wolverhampton Archives & Local Studies?
The Friends Group started as an independent body at the end of 2009.
The group’s aims and objectives include:
- Promoting and supporting the work of the Archives service
- Raising the profile of archives locally and encouraging the use of them
- Raising funds for the Archives service
- Providing a forum for users of the Archives service to enable communication with each other and with the service
What We Do
We support and promote the work of the Archives service through fundraising, by providing volunteers to work on archives projects and by helping at archives events.
Our main source of fundraising comes from providing refreshments at events such as the highly successful Local History Fair and Local History Symposium. We also sell a range of family history binders and conservation-grade sleeves which help preserve valuable documents.
Members of the Friends Group contributed greatly to the ‘Taking Account of Our Past’ project, undertaking valuable research and helping with basic conservation work. The project won the prestigious 2012 National Archive Volunteering Award.
Members of the group are also engaged in the transcription of Wolverhampton parish registers.
We arrange a series of regular meetings throughout the year, held at the Archives, with a range of speakers talking on a variety of local history subjects. We also produce a quarterly newsletter. During the summer months we organise walks around areas of local interest.
Meetings
The Friends Group meets monthly on Saturday mornings at 11am at the Molineux Hotel Building, home of the Archives service. Refreshments are available upon arrival. Admission for visitors is £2.00.
